“Donnyland”: Ukraine’s bold gambit to flatter Trump over Donbas

Ukraine's bold gambit to flatter Trump

According to reports, Ukrainian negotiators have suggested calling one of the disputed regions of the Donbas “Donnyland” which means “Trumpland” in homage to US President Donald Trump.

The suggestion was made by four individuals close to the negotiations, who agreed to talk anonymously owing to the confidential nature of the peace talks.

The idea initially emerged as a joke made by a Ukrainian negotiator who sought to convince the American government to be more assertive in its opposition to Russia’s claims.

The term is an amalgamation of “Donbas” and “Donald.” The joke eventually took on a life of its own.

In the past few months, Ukrainian officials have crafted a flag in shades of green and gold, while an artificial intelligence system has been used to develop an anthem for Donnyland.

This gesture reflects an ongoing trend in the field of international diplomacy whereby countries across the globe have tried to curry favor with Trump by flattering his notorious penchant for self promotion.

From Saudi Arabia to Greenland, countries have adopted a strategy involving renaming infrastructure and projects after Trump in order to influence him.

As per multiple reports, the scheme failed to sway US policy towards Donbas.

Donbas refers to the territory currently controlled by Ukrainian military forces in the region.

The Russian side has been pushing for Ukraine to remove its military personnel from the area before agreeing to a ceasefire.

As recently as the end of March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed that the Kremlin issued an ultimatum of two months to the United States, stating that Ukraine would need to withdraw from the area or face a tougher deal for peace.

Abandonment of the area has always been rejected by Zelensky.

He announced in March that he would never give up Donbas or the estimated 200,000 Ukrainians who live there, saying that leaving the territory would provide the Russians with free access towards the heart of Ukraine.

Instead, Kyiv has offered a ceasefire on current battle lines before moving on to a larger solution for the dispute. However, Moscow has refused the offer and demanded the complete withdrawal of Ukraine.

However, talks hit a snag at the end of February due to disputes regarding the issue of territory when America’s conflict with Iran diverted the attention of US diplomats towards solving its diplomatic issues.

It is understood that a US delegation will visit Russia in an attempt to resolve the crisis soon.

The “Donnyland” incident, even if bizarre in nature, highlights how far Kyiv has gone to get Washington’s attention in the peace talks. Irrespective of whether the move was a diplomatic ploy or a joke at a time of war.
