A burst water main tore through a portion of Sydney’s lower north shore on Monday, leaving thousands of homes and businesses with little to no water and sending floodwater across Cremorne and into Sydney Harbour, damaging several properties.
The footpath and portions of the road were damaged when the main broke on Grasmere Road close to Primrose Park.
The immediate burst site was not the only area affected by the disturbance.
While repairs were underway, Sydney Water informed local media that up to 20,000 properties might be experiencing low pressure.

Nine reported that approximately 19,200 customers in Cremorne, Neutral Bay and Mosman were impacted. While workers isolated the damaged main, some residents also complained about brown tap water.
Floodwater was seen to flow downhill toward the low point of Primrose Park until it flowed into the harbour, adding to the existing damage to the area.
“Our crews have isolated the mains and restored pressure and supply to customers previously in an affected area,” added a spokesperson from Sydney Water.
The public utility also advised customers in multistorey units to confirm that their privately owned booster pump was reset by a qualified plumber before their water service would be restored to their buildings.
Customers had their water service restored late on the afternoon of Monday, but work to repair the broken pipe continued at the location where it ruptured.
Grasmere Road and Young Street remained closed to vehicles at that time, as they had been earlier in the day and motorists were requested to avoid the area as work crews remained on scene.
Reports earlier indicated that the impact of the breaking pipe had affected users from Mosman to Lindfield and continued to have a significant impact on the supply of water to various users across the entire North Shore water distribution system until pressure was restored.
