Sydney dance music festival turns tragic after one dies and six are rushed to hospital

One person has died and several others were taken to hospital after falling ill at the Dreamstate dance music festival at Sydney Olympic Park late on Saturday night.

NSW Police said officers were patrolling the venue when several patrons became unwell at about 11:30pm. The man, who was in his 40s and has not yet been formally identified, died at the scene.

Police are investigating the circumstances including whether illegal drugs were involved. Some outlets have reported that six people were taken to hospital and one person remains in critical condition.

NSW Health said in a separate update there were two urgent medical transfers and three non-urgent transfers to hospital.

Minister for Music and Nighttime Economy John Graham said no pill testing service was operating at Dreamstate while the state’s year round drug testing was running at selected festivals.

The medical emergencies also come as NSW Health warns that high dose MDMA tablets and tablets containing dipentylone have been detected in NSW with risks increasing when people take higher doses, mix stimulants or use drugs in hot and crowded settings such as festivals and indoor dance parties.

NSW Health has urged people to seek medical help early if they or a friend feel unwell.

Dreamstate had yet to issue a detailed public statement about the Sydney event on Sunday but it did share a warning about high dose MDMA ahead of the Melbourne event.
