A mother has been charged following the death of her newborn baby with police alleging the child’s father murdered the infant.
Authorities said the woman was arrested after detectives continued inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death.
Police have not released further details about the charge or the allegation including where the case is based, citing the ongoing investigation and court processes.
The father is alleged to have been responsible for the baby’s death. Police said the man is facing a murder allegation, but information about his age, relationship status and any other charges has not been confirmed publicly.
Investigators say the baby died after suffering injuries consistent with criminal offending.
Police have not publicly outlined what they allege occurred or when the incident took place and have asked for the matter to be treated with sensitivity due to the age of the child and the impact on the wider family.
As the case moves forward, prosecutors will need to prove any charges beyond reasonable doubt. The accused are entitled to the presumption of innocence.
Police said child death investigations often involve multiple agencies including forensic specialists and welfare authorities and can take time as detectives gather statements, medical evidence and expert reports.
In many cases, coronial processes can also run alongside criminal investigations.
If the charges are contested, the court will set a timetable for the exchange of evidence and future hearing dates.
Restrictions can apply to what information can be published while matters are before the court, particularly when there are child protection concerns.
Police have urged anyone with relevant information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers. They did not say whether further charges are expected.
