BYD will open orders for its Seal 6 plug-in hybrid sedan and wagon in Australia from April 9, pricing the sedan at $34,990 before on-road costs and making it the cheapest PHEV sedan on sale in the country.
That price undercuts the entry-level Toyota Camry Hybrid by $5000, a significant gap given the Camry lacks electric-only driving capability.
The Seal 6 Touring wagon, offered in Premium trim, is priced at $39,990 before on-roads, making it Australia’s most affordable wagon and coming in well below the Skoda Octavia Select at $43,990.
Both models run BYD’s DM 5.0 Super Hybrid powertrain, pairing a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor. The sedan carries a 10.08kWh battery offering 55km of electric-only range under WLTP testing, while the wagon’s larger 19kWh battery stretches that to 100km.

Total range on a full tank and charge exceeds 1400km for the sedan and 1300km for the wagon. Australian Government certification documents list total system outputs of 130kW for the sedan and 163kW for the wagon, both producing 300Nm of torque.
Standard kit across the range includes a 12.8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, and Level 2 driver assistance through BYD’s DiPilot system.
The wagon variant is perhaps the more notable addition. Station wagons have largely disappeared from the Australian market as SUVs and utes dominate sales charts.
BYD says the Touring offers 670 litres of cargo space, expanding to 1535 litres with the rear seats folded, along with a flat rear floor.

The Seal 6 sedan measures 4840mm long, 1875mm wide and 1495mm tall, making it 80mm shorter but 35mm wider and 50mm taller than the Camry.
As a mid-size PHEV sedan and wagon, it faces essentially no direct plug-in hybrid competition in Australia at this size and price point.
The launch fits BYD’s broader push to challenge Toyota across every major vehicle segment in Australia. The Chinese manufacturer has more than doubled its sales year on year in 2026, climbing to sixth in the market after finishing eighth in 2025.
BYD finished third in March, behind only Toyota and Kia. The Seal 6 is BYD’s fifth plug-in hybrid model in Australia, joining the Sealion 5, Sealion 6, Sealion 8 and Shark 6 ute. Deliveries are expected to follow shortly after orders open on April 9.
