Bodo Glimt shock Champions League as they join the biggest giant killing upsets

Bodo/Glimt have pulled off one of the Champions League’s biggest upsets after knocking Inter Milan out with a 2 to 1 win at the San Siro, sealing a 5 to 2 aggregate win.

The Norwegian side arrived in Milan with a 3 to 1 lead from the first leg and played with the same confidence on Tuesday night.

Jens Petter Hauge put them further ahead on aggregate in the 58th minute when he scored from a rebound after Yann Sommer saved Ole Didrik Blomberg’s shot.

Hakon Evjen then scored in the 72nd minute before Alessandro Bastoni got one back for Inter 5 minutes later.

Inter started quickly and spent long periods attacking but could not find a way through. ESPN said Inter finished with 30 shots, their most in a Champions League match on Opta records since 2003 to 04 but they could not turn it into goals.

The result sends Bodo/Glimt into the round of 16 and marks a first for Norwegian football, they are the first Norwegian side to advance from a Champions League knockout tie.

Bodo/Glimt coach Kjetil Knutsen told: “It has been a journey… There are unbelievably many people behind this who have such strong belief in the project.”

Evjen said: “Look at that amazing group. It’s surreal and insanely cool, I don’t know what to say.”

Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella said: “Bodo deserve congratulations, they beat us home and away, so clearly they deserved to go through.”

The upset has quickly been compared with past Champions League surprises including Deportivo La Coruna turning around a 4 to 1 first leg loss to knock out AC Milan in 2004 and Ajax’s 4 to 1 win at the Bernabeu to knock out Real Madrid in 2019.
