Jonathan Andic, the eldest son of Isak Andic who founded the clothing retail chain Mango, has been arrested by Spanish police following the suspicion of his involvement in the death of his father while hiking near Barcelona in December 2024.
The 45 year old suspect was detained by the regional Catalan police force, Mossos d’Esquadra, and brought to court premises in Martorell for questioning on Tuesday.
According to a police spokesman who refused to be named, citing internal policies, the case is under non disclosure.
Isak Andic, aged 71 at the time, fell about 150 meters into a ravine while hiking with his son in mountains near the Catalan capital.
Jonathan Andic was the sole witness to the accident that was deemed unfortunate.
An investigation was opened, but suspended in a few weeks due to lack of evidence.
However, it was reconsidered in March 2025, and in October the case was classified as possible homicide.
He is one of three siblings who are listed as successors to their family’s wealth and functions as vice chairman of the board of Mango, one of Spain’s biggest clothing retail chain stores.
He has occupied various high-ranking positions in the firm for many years and was expected to assume more responsibility after the death of his father.
Isak Andic migrated from Turkey to Spain during childhood along with his family.
He started the first Mango store in Barcelona in 1984 and developed it into one of Europe’s most successful fast fashion retail companies with stores in numerous countries all over the world.
Recognized as one of the richest men in Spain when he passed away.
The detention is a dramatic development in a case that seemed like it had been wrapped up only several weeks after the crime was committed.
Under the court’s confidentiality order, the police and prosecution authorities do not disclose any information about what led them to reinvestigate the case.
Local press have speculated that discrepancies in the story made by the suspect on the day of the incident might have been the reason behind this decision.
According to Spanish criminal proceedings, any person detained by the police is supposed to be presented to the court within 72 hours after which the court may decide to grant him bail pending further investigations.
