What makes Iran Kharg Island so important to the US attack?

Kharg Island oil facilities

Kharg Island has become one of the most important places in the Iran conflict after US President Donald Trump said American forces struck military targets there but left the island’s oil facilities untouched for now.

The target matters because Kharg is the main route for Iran’s crude exports, handling about 90% of shipments. It also sits in deep water which lets very large tankers load there in a way mainland ports cannot easily do.

Pipelines from some of Iran’s biggest producing fields run to terminals and storage on Kharg. This makes it a key link between the country’s oilfields and the global market.

About 1.55 million barrels a day were shipped through Kharg this year with roughly 18 million barrels of crude in storage there in early March.

A serious disruption would not just hurt Iran’s revenue. It could also tighten global supply and push energy prices higher at a time when markets are already on edge.

Kharg also matters because of where it is. The island is about 26km off Iran’s coast and northwest of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow shipping lane that carries about a fifth of the world’s oil flows.

The Trump administration described the strike as both a warning and an attack. It said oil infrastructure was spared but could be targeted if Iran or anyone else interferes with shipping through the strait.

For Washington, striking Kharg’s military sites without hitting the export terminal appears to be a way to increase pressure without immediately cutting off Iran’s oil trade.

For Tehran, the island remains one of its most sensitive assets. Iranian military leaders have warned that any attack on the country’s oil infrastructure would bring retaliation against energy assets in the region linked to companies working with the US.

This is why Kharg Island stands out in this war. It is not just a military target. It is a pressure point for Iran’s economy, regional shipping and world oil markets.
