Prior to Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to Melbourne on Thursday, Victoria Police have been granted additional authority under the state’s anti terrorism legislation.

The powers were approved by the Supreme Court, they permit police to search people and vehicles and request identification in specific locations associated with the visit.
To restrict access, police can also erect cordons, claims that publishing the zones would interfere with security planning, so they won’t do it.
According to Deputy Commissioner Bob Hill, the actions were taken as a precaution and had nothing to do with any known threats.
“It will not directly relate to or impact upon the lawful protest activity,” stated Bob Hill, Victoria Police’s Deputy Commissioner of Regional Operations.
Following earlier protests in Sydney during Herzog’s Australian visit, protests are anticipated in the city on Thursday night.
Rallies opposing the visit have been promoted by organizers while maintaining public safety, police have stated that they wish to encourage nonviolent protest.
