South Australian police detectives have identified a suspect in the disappearance of four-year-old Gus Lamont. Gus went missing from his family’s remote property at Oak Park Station near Yunta on September 27, 2025.
The investigation is being treated as a major crime, and police say the suspect is someone who lived on the station and knew the child.
Police say Gus was last seen outside in the late afternoon and was missing when his grandmother went to call him inside about half an hour later.
Gus Lamont’s grandmother’s statement is now crucial in efforts to confirm the precise timeline in a large, sparsely monitored area where investigators say routine tracing methods are limited.

Major Crime Officer Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said a suspect emerged in the Gus Lamont case when investigators found inconsistencies in the information provided regarding key events and timelines.
He told reporters that the individual later stopped cooperating, while emphasizing that Gus’s parents are not suspects and have not been charged.
South Australia Police Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said at a press conference: “The person who has withdrawn their cooperation is now considered a suspect in Gus’s disappearance.”
Police said that despite months of searching, there has been no trace of the boy, who is often referred to simply as Gus. They say there is no evidence that he wandered away from home or was abducted by a stranger.
The search operation involved at least eight separate operations, with police deploying more than 160 officers and approximately 230 non-police personnel, including emergency services, defense support, and Indigenous trackers.
Investigators also issued a warrant in January and seized several items, including a car, a motorcycle, and electronic devices, for forensic examination.
This latest development has intensified the focus on the extended family. In a statement released through their lawyers, Gus Lamont’s grandparents, Josie Murray and Shannon Murray, said they were “absolutely devastated” and stressed that the family had cooperated fully.
They said they wanted nothing more than to find Gus and reunite him with his parents. Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers, as Task Force Horizon continues its work.
