The Morrison Government has committed $500,000 for a feasibility study of a project that aims to improve living standards and community wellbeing in Yarrabah, Queensland.
The Social Impact Investment Initiative (Yarrabah Initiative) proposes to use private and public investments to develop and implement strategies to address a wide range of factors which impact on the community’s wellbeing.
Strategies to improve health, housing, employment, infrastructure, economic development, education and legal practices as well as support programs for community members to use upgraded services will make up the comprehensive approach to positively develop the Yarrabah community.
As part of the study, proposed strategies, required investment and governance arrangements will be assessed as part of the study to be completed by 2020.
The Yarrabah Initiative is proposed by a consortium comprising of the Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council and the Yarrabah Leaders Forum, Melbourne Business School, Murra Indigenous Entrepreneurship Program and Asia Pacific Social Impact Centre and private sector organisations WD Scott Global and BroadReach in partnership with Vantage Technologies.
The Morrison Government encourages initiatives that engage with communities and support positive and comprehensive approaches to improving health outcomes for First Australians.
The findings from the 2017 My Life My Lead consultations identified that strong community-led engagement is a key step to developing effective strategies to address the social determinants of health.
We remain committed to continuing to work with local governments and organisations across the country to build strong families and communities.
